چکیده

We address analytically and numerically theproblemofcrackpathprediction in themodelsystem of a crack propagating under thermal loading. We show that one can explain the instability from a straight to a wavy crack propagation by using only the principle of local symmetry and theGriffith criterion. We then argue that the calculations of the stress intensity factors can be combinedwith thestandardcrackpropagationcriteria to obtain theevolutionequation for thecrack tipwithinany loadingconfiguration.Thetheoreticalresultsof thethermalcrackproblemagreewith thenumerical simulations we performed using a phase field model. Moreover, it turns out that the phase-fieldmodel allows to clarify the nature of the transition between straight and oscillatory cracks which is shown to be supercritical.

Estimation of Fracture path in the Structures and the Influences of Non-singular term on crack propagation

In the present research, a fully Automatic crack propagation as one of the most complicated issues in fracture mechanics is studied whether there is an inclusion or no inclusion in the structures. In this study The Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) is utilized because of several drawbacks in standard finite element method in crack propagation modeling. Estimated Crack paths are obtained by ...

Brittle fracture in polycrystalline microstructures with the extended nite element method

A two-dimensional numerical model of microstructural e ects in brittle fracture is presented, with an aim towards the understanding of toughening mechanisms in polycrystalline materials such as ceramics. Quasi-static crack propagation is modelled using the extended nite element method (X-FEM) and microstructures are simulated within the framework of the Potts model for grain growth. In the X-FE...

Simulation of the Mode I fracture of concrete beam with cohesive models

Crack propagation modeling in quasi-brittle materials such as concrete is essential for improving the reliability and load-bearing capacity assessment. Crack propagation explains many failure characteristics of concrete structures using the fracture mechanics approach. This approach could better explain the softening behavior of concrete structures. A great effort has been made in developing nu...

Dynamic and Quasi-Static Tensile Properties of Structural S400 Steel

The study of mechanical behavior of the structural steel S400 under quasi- static and dynamic loading has been the subject of this investigation. In oder to obtain different stress - triaxiality conditions the specimens were notched with 1, 1.5, 2 and 3.5 mm notch radius. The results of fractography show as the velocity of tension increases, ductility reduces and a ductile-brittle transition oc...

SPE 159154 A Variational Approach to the Numerical Simulation of Hydraulic Fracturing

One of the most critical capabilities of realistic hydraulic fracture simulation is the prediction of complex (turning, bifurcating, or merging) fracture paths. In most classical models, complex fracture simulation is difficult due to the need for a priori knowledge of propagation path and initiation points and the complexity associated with stress singularities at fracture tips. In this study,...
